SCOTT BURESH received his undergraduate degree in 1973 from the University of
Oregon and his law degree in 1976 from University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. He
served as a deputy in the Marin County Public Defender’s office and then as an associate with
Bledsoe, Smith, Cathcart, Boyd & Eliot, an insurance defense firm in San Francisco. In 1982, he
co-founded this firm with Ms. Kaplan. Over the span of his career he has acted as insurer-retained
panel counsel in third-party casualty litigation, counsel to insurers in first- and third- party
coverage and bad faith disputes and more recently, as personal counsel for policyholders resolving
third-party claims in conjunction with their liability carriers. Mr. Buresh serves as outside general
counsel to a medical device manufacturer, handling the company’s product liability claims,
insurance coverage and contract disputes. He was counsel to the Buckman Company in the
Orthopedic Bone Screw multidistrict litigation, resulting in the United States Supreme Court
decision Buckman v. Plaintiffs’ Legal Committee. He has lectured on insurance issues to the
California Association of Defense Counsel, the Primerus Defense Institute and the State of
California’s Trial Judicial Attorneys Institute. He serves as an arbitrator with the San Francisco
Superior Court.
